What are the Zones of Regulation?

The “Zones” is a way our elementary schools help teach and guide students to become more aware of their emotions, needs, and ways to resolve conflicts.  We want our students to be able to get the most out of learning. This means they will experience moments where they will feel a bunch of emotions and need to learn skills around dealing with them in appropriate ways.  The first step is in naming their emotion so that they are able to work with teachers to build skills around it.  Emotions are natural, however, behavior is learned. Our goal is to make sure all our students have the tools they need to get the most out of their school experience academically, socially, and emotionally.  We want all of our students to feel supported and understood.  The “Zones” helps bridge the gap between what they are feeling and getting what they need.

The Zones of Regulation Categories

The Zones are used to describe feelings that need to be addressed.  Students are taught to identify which color they are in and learn strategies and ways to get to a GREEN ZONE. This zone is optimal for learning, thinking, and building positive social relationships.

The RED ZONE – possible feelings around anger, rage, devastation, terror

The YELLOW ZONE – possible feelings around stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the “wiggles”, or nervousness

The GREEN ZONE – possible feelings around feels happy, focused, content, and ready to learnThe BLUE ZONE – possible feelings around feels sad tired sick or bored
